Foundation Sewing Workshop

The Foundation Sewing Workshop provides the student with an introduction to designing a garment for themselves using simple pattern modification techniques either by computer or manually; then to be able to cut and make the garment using simple techniques that guarantee success. During this workshop students will learn:

  • Body measurement-taking and pattern size adjustment
  • Design development or selection
  • Pattern interpretation and modification using either manual techniques or CAD (StyleCAD or Gerber AccuMark)
  • Fabric selection, fabric properties, and composition
  • Calculation of fabric and accessory requirements
  • Fabric laying, pattern placement, and cutting
  • Garment construction techniques relevant to the design

Garment finishing and pressing

At the conclusion of this program, participants will have designed and constructed their garment and compiled an A4 reference portfolio. The Foundation Sewing Workshop is aimed at those wishing to gain pattern modification and sewing skills or those with an interest in fashion. The minimum requirement for this workshop is the ability to follow instruction,  then to be able to work independently with some guidance on a sewing machine. Participants will have access to all the technical equipment required for use during the 5-day course. They will also be supplied the fabric, thread, and accessories required to complete the garment, fabric, and accessories required to produce working samples of construction techniques, and an A4 presentation folder and the handouts to include in their reference portfolio.

    Who can apply for a Whitehouse Workshop?

    Whitehouse Workshops are suitable for all ages from secondary school onward. These workshops are intended for those with little or no drawing/image styling skills but have a keen desire to develop them.

    How much is a Whitehouse Workshop?

    Whitehouse workshops are AUD$629 including a basic art kit. 

    What do I get out of the workshop?

    Students receive instruction from design specialists from the creative industries who oversee the educational quality of the delivery of each course. Each participant will receive a Whitehouse Certificate of Participation as recognition of course completion. Students will receive guidance and information on the application process for full-time courses at Whitehouse.

    Who can apply for School Workshops?

    Only School students can attend School Workshops, the delivery for these workshops are either incursions or at the Whitehouse campuses. All bookings must be made through your school.
