Winter Holiday Workshops

Since 1988 Whitehouse Institute of Design, Australia has prepared students for careers within the design industry. Specialising in Fashion Design, Photography & Creative Direction and Interior Design, Whitehouse has long been considered a leader in design education within Australia. With campuses in both central Sydney and the Melbourne CBD, Whitehouse is able to provide our students with the unique opportunity to experience both major cities. 
 
We are proud to offer an introduction to design and life at Whitehouse through our Winter Series Workshops. No experience is necessary to undertake these workshops. These workshops are aimed at those wishing to develop their design skills and compile a portfolio required to successfully continue studies in design.

  • Foundation Sewing Workshop - 5 Days

    The Foundation Sewing Workshop provides the student with an introduction to designing a garment for themselves using simple pattern modification techniques either by computer or manually; then to be able to cut and make the garment using simple techniques that guarantee success. During this workshop students will learn:

    • Body measurement-taking and pattern size adjustment
    • Design development or selection
    • Pattern interpretation and modification using either manual techniques or CAD (StyleCAD or Gerber AccuMark)
    • Fabric selection, fabric properties, and composition
    • Calculation of fabric and accessory requirements
    • Fabric laying, pattern placement, and cutting
    • Garment construction techniques relevant to the design

  • Fashion Illustration Workshop - 5 Days

    The Fashion Illustration Workshops focus on fashion drawing techniques such as colour and textural application, as well as developing design and presentation styles, and expanding skills to include advanced figure illustration, grouping and angled poses, advanced media such as pastels, large scale illustration and range development. 

    This five day workshop focuses around: 

    • Freehand sketching of human figures
    • Freehand sketching of faces
    • Illustration of garments
    • Print and textile design
    • Application of watercolour pencils, professional markers and felt-tip pens for professional rendering
    • Analysis of fashion trends and preparation of a fashion storyboard for a design brief
    • Development of an individual design aesthetic
    • Portfolio development and presentation skills

  • Interior Illustration Workshop - 5 Days

    The Interior Illustration Workshops will explore drawing techniques and design scheme presentation for interior spaces. In these workshops we cover one and two-point perspective drawing, floor plans, object sketching for furniture, interior rendering techniques, colour concepts and trend forecasting, textile design and portfolio layout. 

    This five day workshop focuses around: 

    • One point perspective drawing of interior spaces
    • Two point perspective drawing of interior spaces
    • Drawing and rendering simple furniture pieces using watercolour pencils, professional markers and felt-tip pens
    • Concepts of colour perception and relationships
    • Development of a textile design using specified colour concepts based on the latest trends in interior design and decoration
    • Exploring design concepts for a range of interior spaces
    • Portfolio development and presentation skills

  • Photography & Creative Direction Workshop - 5 Days

    The Photography & Creative Direction Workshops will explore aspects of styling in industries such as fashion, interiors, food, events, film, advertising, visual merchandising, and magazines as you work towards the creation of a styled image. This workshop is available in a singular five day block, in which you will gain an understanding of Photography & Creative Direction and learn techniques for presenting your creative ideas.

    This five day workshop focuses around:

    • Visualisation and communication of ideas through collage and drawing
    • Sourcing of images and materials to develop themed mood boards
    • Fashion styling for various uses including catwalk and photo shoots
    • Methods and creative processes for an event
    • Exploration of presentation techniques for interior environments
    • Portfolio development and presentation skills

    Who can apply for a Whitehouse Workshop?

    Whitehouse Workshops are suitable for all ages from secondary school onward. These workshops are intended for those with little or no drawing/image styling skills but have a keen desire to develop them.

    How much is a Whitehouse Workshop?

    Whitehouse workshops are AUD$629 including a basic art kit. 

    What do I get out of the workshop?

    Students receive instruction from design specialists from the creative industries who oversee the educational quality of the delivery of each course. Each participant will receive a Whitehouse Certificate of Participation as recognition of course completion. Students will receive guidance and information on the application process for full-time courses at Whitehouse.

    Who can apply for School Workshops?

    Only School students can attend School Workshops, the delivery for these workshops are either incursions or at the Whitehouse campuses. All bookings must be made through your school.

    What are Brisbane and Perth Workshops?

    These two-day workshops are offered during the spring school holiday periods in Brisbane and Perth. Detailed dates, times, costs and locations can be found via the Brisbane and Perth Workshops tab.
